Charles Armstrong School Reviews

There are a limited number of schools in the Bay Area that serve children with dyslexia.  Charles Armstrong School is absolutely the best fit for our son.  Although it is a commuter school with children attending from all over the Bay Area, the school manages to build a sense of community.  Our decision to send our son to Charles Armstrong School for 4th grade has been life altering for him.  He now feels successful, proud and  eager to go to school.  He is amongst his true peers and is finally thriving the way he should have all along.  The Charles Armstrong School's teachers are masters at the art of teaching children with dyslexia.

Our 11 year old grandson has been attending Charles Armstrong since he was 7. The entire school has been such a positive experience for him and us. The staff support is above and beyond what we got in the public school. The teachers have worked with our grandson and us to help him overcome his learning difficulties. Thekids are really great and very much individuals. The CAPSO group provides atight link with the school for the parents. We are a real team working towards our goal of maximizing our kids skills and abilities.

Charles Armstrong is great at caring about the child as a "whole", not just academics.

I am a first-year parent to CAS with my daughter starting this fall.  I am impressed with the level of participation of the teachers in her classroom.  I am also impressed with the knowledge base of the teachers and that the multisensory teaching style is incorporated in all subjects.  It's a breath of fresh air when my child, who is dyslexic, also had issues with math in terms of memorizing math facts.  It didn't matter how many times parents/teachers try to teach by basically rote memorization if your child does not learn in that style, it is a fruitless and frustrating effort.  Now she is teaching me her math facts and showing me how her teachers are teaching them to her.  She is definitely "getting it".  Her main issue is the reading and I see that her decoding is improving and most importantly, her comprehension of what she has read.  She is definitely happy to go to the school as she states she gets to chew gum in class (yes, it is a sensory modulation teaching technique).

This school has absolutely changed my son's life! He is a brilliant kid who has a learning disability, and the staff absolutely understands his situation and teaches the way he learns! They are so insightful, understanding and capable, I feel lucky that we are part of that community.

This is an excellent school for children with language based learning disabilities. There are minor irritations as may be found everywhere, but for those parents with children who cannot manage within mainstream education, this place is a life saver. Small group, multisenory learning using the latest technology and research in teaching techinques make an enormous difference. Though it is very expensive, it is easy to see where the money is going, directly into the classroom.

Our Story
My son entered CAS at the beginning of 2nd Grade with a reading age of a young kindergaartner. He could read AT and BAT, but the effort of decoding these words, left him irritable and without any understanding of what he had read. After only 2 years of school, he was also very vulnerable, beleiving himself to be stupid and wrong. Though he had been in schools that cared and tried to provide for him, he had been bullied and correctly beleived that his difference was the cause. During this time his father and his grandfather died. My son was very fragile.

Just over 2 years later, my son is reading at grade level. his comprehension has moved from 0 to 99 percentile. He can do math, and though his Dyslexia means that he will never be an athelete, he does not have panic attacks about going to school on the days that they have PE. My son now honors the fact that he is different. He has strategies that allow him to compete in this world that thinks differently. He understands that his difference means that he has a great deal to contribute. My son still has major learning differences and he is still sensitive and intense, but CAS have not only taught him reading, writing and arithmatic, but they have loved him to pieces. I suspect that instead of an angry, disaffected youth, beaten up by society, my boy shall grow into a productive, caring individual replete with the skills, emotionally and academically to make a significant contribution to the world. That is an amazing legacy. CAS is an extraordinary school.

This school changed my family's life.  My son was struggling in a prep school and in 4th grade, I put him at CAS for summer school.  He told me it was too easy - kids couldn't even spell "A."  The following year he went to regular summer school, perservered, but had a difficult time, as in regular school.  Prior to entering 6th grade, he asked to go to CAS for summer school because he felt smart.  We were late our first day at school, and I mentioned to the staff that we were here for summer school and that there was never availability for the school during the regular school year.  They told me there were a few opennings in 6th grade, we got our testing done and were accepted in three weeks.  It was a Godsend.  He has changed from a kid who felt inferior to one that feels successful.  Today he does his homework on his own and strives to excel.  This confidence has also expanded into the sports arena, where at his prior school, he was on the third string team and basically a bench warmer and fast-forward to today he is someone who actively participates and feels good about his contribution.  His life has changed forever and I am so grateful to be a part of the school.  I only wish it could keep going through high school and college.  If every kid, regardless of their academic status could have exposure to the nurturing, encouraging and building of academic tools that CAS provides, the world would indeed be a better place.

CAS is an excellent school for dyslexic learners (actually all schools should educate the CAS way!) Since begining at the school in 4th grade, my son's reading, expressive writing and spelling have all markedly improved.  CAS has helped him to gain more confidence overall and, as such, he has excelled academically in other areas like science and math.  What a relief to find a school where YOU don't have to explain what is needed for your child to succeed.  I knew we were in the right place when I discovered that Parent/Teacher conferences take place during the first week of school and teachers have already read your childs profile, reports and evaluations and are prepared to intelligently discuss you and your child's educational goals.  The quality of the teaching and support staff is the best I have encountered.  Attending CAS is one of the best decisions we've every made!

Charles Armstrong is a wonderful place for kids who are struggling in regular school, and who are consequently feeling bad about themselves.  The program is well thought out - with the intense involvement from the head of school to classroom assistants. The children sense this - they do well, and can enjoy school.  The teachers are well trained, and get to know your child and his or her needs are addressed. It's expensive, but the scholarship program is very generous.

By the way the diversity rating shown above is incorrect. I believe both the Asian/Pacific Islander and Hispanic percentages are too low and don't accurately reflect the student body.

Great school.  Teaches students with language based learning differences and dyslexia to develop strategies that will help them when they transition back to traditional private and public schools.

If you are considering this school let me assure you; you have come to the right place. I can't say enough good things about this school! My daughter is learning and happy again! What an amazing group of committed and educated professionals. CAS has a wonderful four part program that not only teaches the child in a way that makes sense to them academically but also builds self esteem and gives them the ability to self advocate for their future needs. We have all been where you are right now and as difficult as this is take comfort in knowing that things will get better once your child start learning in an environment like CAS. I wish my other two kids schools were this great.

Charles Armstrong specializes in teaching children with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.  They're great at it!  My son's attitude has turned around completely in a couple months and he's making progress.  The school works on the whole child not just the academics.  They build self-esteem and self reliance.  I'd highly recommend it.  It's expensive but they offer super low child-teacher ratios to make it work.

CAS is a wonderful, caring community with excellent teachers, administration, and staff. Our son has been at CAS for two years now and his progress has been nothing short of amazing! Our son loves going to school and is very proud of his ability to read and write (both of which our local public school said he'd never be able to do)

CAS is an A+ school in every way.

Charles Armstrong is an amazing school.

It provides the broad curriculum required in every California school, while focusing on the indiviudual needs of students who stuggle with language arts.

The results are quickly evident in students who are more capable readers/writers and carry the self confidence that comes with this.

This is an excellent school if your child has been diagnosed with a language learning disability (ie. dyslexia). They have small classes and teach in all modalities.  Kids leave this school with the information and self confidence they need to succeed in a main stream school environment.
