Jennifer Fojas: I love Buena Vista my family has been attending this school since it opened 50 years ago. My son is in kindergarten rite now and he is doing great! The teachers and staff go out of thier way to make sure the students get what they need. It might not be the schools fault it might be your child. We have had nothing but satisfaction with our sons education. If they close this school it will be a great loss to olde Carlsbad. But of course its always about the money, forget our childrens education and what the parents want.

Buena Vista Elementary School
I was seriously disappointed in this school. We tried it for a year. When I expressed my concerns with the principal, she told me that every child can afford to have one bad year. What kind of advice was that?! My son had an IEP and we definitely couldn't "afford to have one bad year". While my son's math scores plummeted to far below failing, I was told that he was still within average. I don't believe in bell curves, and when grades are below 65%, I consider them failing. The only obvious choice was to leave.

What is it?
The California Standards Test (CST) is an annual exam used to measure a student's mastery of the state's grade-level academic standards. The CST is one of the five components of the STAR Program.
Which Grades and Subjects?
Students are assessed in grades 2 through 11 in English language arts and math, in grades 5, 8 and 10 in science, and in grades 8, 10 and 11 in history/social science. In grades 9 through 11, students may also be assessed in math and science, depending on course enrollment.
How is it Scored?
Students receive one of five ratings: far below basic, below basic, basic, proficient or advanced. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

What is it?
The California Achievement Test (CAT/6) is a series of nationally norm-referenced tests that assess general academic knowledge in core subjects, as well as providing national comparisons. The CAT/6 test is one of the five components of the STAR Program.
