About the CST
What is it?
The California Standards Test (CST) is an annual exam used to measure a student's mastery of the state's grade-level academic standards. The CST is one of the five components of the STAR Program.
Which Grades and Subjects?
Students are assessed in grades 2 through 11 in English language arts and math, in grades 5, 8 and 10 in science, and in grades 8, 10 and 11 in history/social science. In grades 9 through 11, students may also be assessed in math and science, depending on course enrollment.
How is it Scored?
Students receive one of five ratings: far below basic, below basic, basic, proficient or advanced. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.
About the CAHSEE
What is it?
The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is used to measure student mastery of specific skills as determined by the state. Students must pass both sections of the exam in order to graduate from high school.
Which Grades and Subjects?
Each student is assessed in grade 10 in English language arts and math. Students can retake the exam up to five times after grade 10.
How is it Scored?
The CAHSEE is an untimed pass/fail test. The goal is for all students to pass both sections of the test.

Before I came to Rancho as a freshman, there was always all this negative opinion and bias toward the school. Quite frankly, you can’t say anything about the school until you’ve been there. Rancho Alamitos has an excellent freshmen program called (F.A.C.T.), which selects the brightest students from middle school and challenges them through vigorous projects and exams (back then, they were hard). Freshmen who aren’t in the program are also thoroughly challenged by some of the best teachers the Garden Grove Unified School District has! The school offers a variety of Advanced Placement courses (to name a few, English Literature, Spanish, Biology, Environmental Science, Calculus AB & BC, US History, European History and more!); AP classes are so useful once you get into college! I graduated in 2007, and they had a large selection of AP classes then; my sister comes here now and she tells me they’re constantly adding more and more AP classes!! On top of that, I loved the diversity at the school and the various student organizations and clubs that were offered. From ethnic clubs, like Spanish Club and Korean Club, to volunteer clubs, like Octagon Club & Student League, to recreational clubs, like a Hip Hop Dance Club and Anime Club, there are many opportunities for students to become involved! Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the sports! They have lots of sports students can join and I played tennis and ran track/field in my HS years and loved it to death! Honest to goodness, Rancho Alamitos is a great school and if I happen to still be around when I have kids, I would definitely send them there!
