About Downtown Value

  • Downtown Value is located in Los Angeles, CA and is one of 824 schools in Los Angeles Unified. It is a charter school that serves 411 students in grades K-8.

Charter schools are public schools, but differ from traditional public schools in that they are independent and are operated by educators, parents, community leaders, educational entrepreneurs, or others. Funding for charter schools is based on designated local or state educational organizations. Those organizations are responsible for monitoring and assessing the quality and effectiveness of education, but permit the schools to operate outside of the traditional public school education system.

Downtown Value did not make AYP in 2009. Under No Child Left Behind, a school makes Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) if it achieves the minimum levels of improvement determined by the state of California in terms of student performance and other accountability measures. See Downtown Value's test results to learn more about school performance.

A school's Academic Performance Index (API) is a scale that ranges from 200 to 1000 and is calculated from the school's performance in the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. The state has set 800 as the API target for all schools to meet.

Downtown Value had an API growth score of 713 in 2009. California uses the Academic Performance Index (API) to measure annual school performance and year-to-year improvement. Downtown Value's 2009 base score was 719 and the school did not meet its 2009 school-wide growth target.

In 2008, Downtown Value had 20 students for every full-time equivalent teacher. The California average is 21 students per full-time equivalent teacher. Learn more about Downtown Value's students and teachers.

I think it is a great school.i like the fact that many parents are involved with school activities. The teachers are very dedicated to their jobs.My child has improved alot since i enrolled her in this school. The extra curricular activities are very interesting and exciting for both of my young daughters. They enjoy attending school as much as i love taking them.I hope both of them graduate from a charter school with honors.Im pretty sure they can do it because their teachers will support them as much as me.And i as well wish that the school was bigger.

Teachers are always teaching and guiding students through some type of activity.  Parents are required to complete 20 hours or they must help through donations.  The hours for parent conferences and parent meetings count. The school has a very small and non-engaging playground.  The students have activities after school but they have not won any trophies in sports.  Administration and teachers are strict so there is rarelly any bullying going on.  The school is pretty safe.  I know my child is in advance math, I think they put all the student in a higher math program.  I know my child was struggling at one point and the special education teacher, Ms. Jill was very helpful.  I love this school and I am glad my child is there.

The staff and teachers at this school are strict but work very hard and have high expectations for students.  My son and some of his friends ran the LA marathon, and he looks forward to going to school. I have walked through the hall ways of the school and I am amazed that kinder and first grade students are writing letters and essays within a few months after starting the school.  The only thing I would change is that I wish the school was bigger.

"This school has absolutely changed my son's life! He is a brilliant kid who has a learning disability, and the staff absolutely understands his situation and teaches the way he learns! They are so insightful, understanding and capable, I feel lucky that we are part of that community."

"They have a newly built building which is absolutely gorgeous and very well laid out. In general the staff is caring, but firm. Only bad thing is that parent involvement is not encouraged. Yet!!"
