About This School

Downtown Value School is located in Los Angeles, CA and is one of 959 schools in Los Angeles Unified School District. It is a charter school that serves 450 students in grades K-8.

Charter schools are public schools, but differ from traditional public schools in that they are independent and are operated by educators, parents, community leaders, educational entrepreneurs, or others. Funding for charter schools is based on designated local or state educational organizations. Those organizations are responsible for monitoring and assessing the quality and effectiveness of education, but permit the schools to operate outside of the traditional public school education system. See Downtown Value School's test results to learn more about school performance.

A school's Academic Performance Index (API) is a scale that ranges from 200 to 1000 and is calculated from the school's performance in the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. The state has set 800 as the API target for all schools to meet.

Downtown Value School had an API growth score of 816 in 2012. California uses the Academic Performance Index (API) to measure annual school performance and year-to-year improvement. Downtown Value School's 2012 base score was 800 and the school did meet its 2012 school-wide growth target.

In 2010, Downtown Value School had 21 students for every full-time equivalent teacher. The California average is 24 students per full-time equivalent teacher.

Downtown Value School Reviews

I think it is a great school.i like the fact that many parents are involved with school activities. The teachers are very dedicated to their jobs.My child has improved alot since i enrolled her in this school. The extra curricular activities are very interesting and exciting for both of my young daughters. They enjoy attending school as much as i love taking them.I hope both of them graduate from a charter school with honors.Im pretty sure they can do it because their teachers will support them as much as me.And i as well wish that the school was bigger.

Teachers are always teaching and guiding students through some type of activity.  Parents are required to complete 20 hours or they must help through donations.  The hours for parent conferences and parent meetings count. The school has a very small and non-engaging playground.  The students have activities after school but they have not won any trophies in sports.  Administration and teachers are strict so there is rarely any bullying going on.  The school is pretty safe.  I know my child is in advanced math, I think they put all the student in a higher math program.  I know my child was struggling at one point and the special education teacher, Ms. Jill was very helpful.  I love Downtown Value school and I am glad my child is there.

The staff and teachers at this school are strict but work very hard and have high expectations for students.  My son and some of his friends ran the LA marathon, and he looks forward to going to school. I have walked through the hall ways of the school and I am amazed that kinder and first grade students are writing letters and essays within a few months after starting the school.  The only thing I would change is that I wish the school was bigger.
