Orion Academy
orionpenguin: They provide a safe place for students who are often bullied, and teased to the point of severe depression to learn and grow. The majority of their graduates point to the friendships they formed as the number one asset of the Orion program.

orionpenguin: They provide a structured clinical approach to the social and emotional growth of the teenagers they serve. With four clinical psychologists on staff, and one transition counselor, students receive a very personalized, structured plan for social and pragmatic language success.
They provide a real community for these students, in an environment that feels like a “real’ high school with dances, proms, spirit rallies, student council, clubs, and afterschool events. Typical students at Orion participate in at least one club. In fact, almost 1/3 of the high school students participate in the cross-country team.

orionpenguin: Orion Academy is changing the view on what spectrum students can achieve.
They implement a balanced and holistic approach to the education of the spectrum student by equally emphasizing academics, pragmatic language, and social skills. Social skills and pragmatics are areas that, without attention and growth, would impede student success in a neuro-typical world.

orionpenguin: Orion Academy has demonstrated that a program that considers the clinical needs of a spectrum student can tap into the strengths of the student and develop skills that help overcome their learning deficits. Not only have they forged a new approach to teaching spectrum students they have also created a program that can be reproduced.
They increase the number of AS students who go on to college and careers. Taking students who might otherwise have needed social support to adults who contribute to society.

orionpenguin: Orion Academy is a school in which I can be myself and walk around without fear of being judged. I'm taught by teachers whom I can rely on and I know I can ask them for help.

Orion academy does many things well and there are a lot of things that I could say about it. I could mention how it manages to balance academics with social education, or how the teachers are devoted to their students success but there is one thing that stands out to me about orion. Orion is able to care for each individual student and adapt to fit their needs. it's able to tailor its curiculum and even its rules in order to create the environment each student needs.

administration is intimidating and difficult to communicate with. While a good school for some, there are much better schools out there for students with aspergers and nld

I am a parent of a graduate. I was very pleased to see my child excel at our local Jr. College. My son is pursuing a degree that requires him to express himself with the written word (i.e. not a science) quite a bit. He was well prepared to write at a college level. During his time at Orion, he flourished and grew into a responsible, young adult and the atmosphere at Orion was a helpful part of his development. There is no perfect school, but there are schools that are a great fit. Orion was the right choice for my child and his success is in part due to his time at Orion.

Love Orion and their dedication to our kid. Our kids can be difficult but are worth the effort and energy this school puts in. They do hold the kids to a higher standard. Sure, it's tough to support change sometimes but my kid is in a 4 year college and would never be there if not for Orion.

Love this school and the vision for the future it provides. Sure, some negative parents (as in previous review) but that's just sad for them, some people are never happy. The kids do well here and they do more than any other school we have known - public or private - in preparing us for post high school. THEY GET THE KIDS. The faculty and administration are always available and the school is a warm and positive place to be. Wish we had been here from the start of high school.

Orion is a school with a current attendance about 60 students in 8-12 grades
Orion Academy is a great school for people with Aspergers, NLD and other neurological diagnostics. Orion Academy has a strong academic program. Orion also offers winter abroad trips to selected juniors/senior during their 3 week winter break. Started in 2011 Orion Academy offers new programs, such as the 3 day weekend trip to the Oregon Shakespeare festival and in the summer a 3 week backpacking program. The teachers I have have been excellent and pro at the subject they teach. Orion Academy also offers a non competitive Track/Cross Country Program all year. Many runners also participate in community runs in the East Bay.
Orion Academy also has an Excellent Latin Program. Students have finished first in Mythology and the Ludi (regional convention) as well as one first place at the California Latin State Convention.

Orion is a great school and not one that is perfect for every kid. Not sure abut the unhappy parent, but you can't please all the people. The school and the administration have been great for my kid.

Pervasive negative interaction and policy making from the administration made this school a bad match for my son and also for many of the families that I met there.

First off, there are currently 50 students, not 34. Why does everyone get the number of students wrong? It's crazy!
Anyway, Orion is a great school for people with Aspergers like me. I've made more freinds here then I have at all my other schools combined. Also, you don't get that much homework, and the teachers are nice. There are some really fun classes, too, such as Dog Class. I give this school a 4 out of 5, which is really good. (I didn't give it a 5 because I hate one of the teachers. Only one, though. And he's new.)
