Ascend School Reviews
Ascend is a unique "small school," in that it is one of the few schools in Oakland that is an "Arts Integrated" school. Art is integrated into almost every discipline of the curriculum. Twice a year the school presents a major showcase of exactly how the arts in/and education work in their bi-annual Arts Expeditions.
The school has a multi-cultural staff, and about 70% of the staff speaks more than one language. A relatively new building - Ascend's physical atmosphere is modern and inviting. Though it's nestled in a high crime area- the children and parents feel safe and the campus is open to the community. Ascend has several community programs, including Parenting Classes, Girls Inc., Boys to Men, free food and clothing programs, and an exciting after school program - the Ascend Sunset Warriors.
Scores from last year's CST were amazing- with gains made in almost every group. The largest gains were made by the EL (English Learners) group!
Ascend features its own music room, art room (with a darkroom and pottery kiln), 3 computer labs, library, 2 gardens, huge playground and parking lot, and community kitchen. Ascend is a great school - and the majority of the students attend Ascend from K - 8. Classes are looped - so that teachers remain with their students for 2 years.
