Beacon is a good school, with small class sizes.  My son has attended since he was in First Grade.  Down side is that they do not embrace computer learning or an academic curriculum and focus on music, dance and art instead of reading, math, and science.  A great school if you want your child to grow up to be a musician, dancer or artist.    Very limited sports or athletic program, with no grass fields for the kids to play on. Recess is in a big asphalt lot.  Very expensive for 2/3 of the students ($20K per year) so the school can attract a diverse student base by offering big tuition discounts to disadvantaged minority students.  A good, but expensive, urban artsy school, if that's what you're looking for.

Beacon Day School is an amazing school where children love learning and love to come to school. My daughter has attended since age 3 in the preschool and is now a 7th grader.

Beacon Day School really gets how children learn best. Learning is done in pace groups and through mastery of skills. The arts curriculum is fantastic and every student feels that they can contribute to the arts. Best of all, Beacon truly reflects the community of oakland. It is diverse in many ways.
