This school is not just a school but a community. Not only are the teachers the best you will find anywhere but the families of Explorer will become like your own extended family. We have been at this school since 2003 and will be very sad when we leave. It is not a simple drop off preschool but a place where parents and children alike will learn. Kids learn through play and parents learn through parent education classes and the role modeling of the teachers.
The school is play based which more and more studies are showing are the best type of "education" for a preschooler. They do not have the kids complete worksheets or force the children to memorize facts and learn to write before they are developmentally ready. Rather, they encourage experiential learning through play. It is a wonderful program that you will believe yourself fortunate to be a part of!
We have been at Explorer since Sep 2011 and couldn't be happier. My son is 4 and in the MWF class. We decided to enroll him here because a friend of ours had a great experience, and we wanted our son to have access to wonderful teachers, kids his age, and play-based learning. This school also gives me the opportunity to be in his class one day a week, get to know his friends and his friends' parents, participate in what he and the other kids are learning, and the chance to start to prepare for kindergarten classroom readiness.
There are different "stations" where kids can visit throughout their day at school - inside/outside art station, literacy room, science room, cooking station (the kids help make their own healthy snacks!), dramatic play station, outdoor play. There is also group time each day so the kids have focused time with the teacher.
I have 2 other kids and a part-time job, and before we started school, I wasn't sure how I was going to fulfill the classroom and family commitment requirements. It has worked out just fine. There is good communication at Explorer via emails from our classroom rep as well as updates to the Explorer website (www.explorerpreschool.org), so I have time to make arrangements for upcoming events.
As I said, we couldn't be happier. Teacher Jackie is awesome; we knew Explorer was the right choice for us the very first week of school. Our son will start the 4-Day class in the fall. We are looking forward to playing/learning at Vasona Park!
Good luck in your search for the right fit for you!

The parents in our school are so committed to the children, school and community. They fully support the teaching staff and help implement our wonderful creative curriculum. Our school is accredited by the National Association for the Young Child and we are proud to serve the Willow Glen and San Jose area.

Little did I know how much Explorer would change my family's life! After much online research, my initial reason for applying to Explorer was because it was parent participation, close to home and potty training isn't a requirement (who knows when that will be). The teachers are experienced and knowledgeable child and parent educators. I'm 100% convinced that I'm a better parent because of the Explorer Parent Education Program, teacher council and other parent role models. I'm better equipped to handle any situation that comes up. I don't handle every situation well, but I have the tools to make the best possible decision the time. My son is accustomed to positive discipline methods because of Explorer and benefits from it every day. And the best part is - HE LOVES TO GO!

Explorer exceeded all of my expectations for what a preschool should be like. We started in the Together Time for Parents and Toddlers class when my twins were 14 months old. I learned so much as a parent in this class. We continued on to the 2s, 3s and now we are in the 4s class where 12 weeks out of the school year class is held at Vasona Park with a nature/science focus. It's amazing! The curriculum is developmentally appropriate and play based. The teachers all are experienced and hold credentials. The school is NAEYC accredited. The parent community is very supportive. The parent education component at Explorer is invaluable. The speakers are all relevant to the ages and stages of the children and the teachers are very focused on child development, brain based research and the importance of play in early childhood. Love this preschool!!
I love this school. It has everything that I looked for in a preschool for my daughter. The teachers are experienced and I look to them for advice and I learn from them in the classroom (since this is a parent participation preschool). The facilities are clean and safe and the environment well suited for learning social lessons (ie number of toys and layout of facilities) as well as how things work. It is a great place for my daughter to be and she likes the school. The equipment and projects are chosen so as to encourage preparation for writing. My daughter learned to write her name at this school and she's 3.5 years old.
