Alvarado (Juan Bautista) Elementary School Reviews
Alvarado is in it's 21st year of operation. We welcomed the new principal, Dr. Brett Geithman a few years back and hope he stays at Alvarado for many more years! The most exciting aspects of Alvarado are the innovative and authentic teaching practices! Alvarado does NOT use a basal reader where every child reads from the same book within their grade level. Instead, teachers provide a "library" of books within their classrooms so that EVERY child self selects a book at his/her independent reading level. In writing, the students are taught "what good writers do" instead of being told what to write. Their math is based in "CGI" where CONCEPTS are taught so children understand math instead of learning the "tricks/steps" of multiication.
The teachers also run Writing Institutes, Reading Institutes where teachers from all over SOCAL pay to learn and observe these practices taking place so they too can do this work within their own classrooms.
Alvarado is an amazing place for children and their families.
I just moved to the area in Signal Hill and I think that there school is great and their afterschool program benefits the children enrolled in school.
