Joe Rennier: Doherty HS is an excellent score for teachers and students. The Social Studies Dept., where I teach, is highly impressive with the skills of the faculty and the curriculum offered. We value strong teacher-student relationships, challenge students on their level of ability, and prepare them for the world outside of HS.
The school is very safe with a relatively minor drug/alcohol problem, very few fights, and an effective discipline program. The worst that can be said about DHS is the frequent cursing by students is offensive. Still, aside from this, the students are respectful to one another and to staff.
Athletically, DHS is average in most sports, but, has an outstanding boy's basketball program due primarily to a legendary head coach. The student-athletes are not as dedicated to sports as schools in the southern portion of the U.S. and the Denver suburbs. The head FB coach and head baseball coach are both outstanding coaches and people.
I teach 9th grade high-risk (mostly underachievers) students in World History and coach a "C" squad baseball team. The students I teach are fine young men and ladies, yet, lack the love of learning and academic commitment to excel at this point.
Hope this candid observation helps you understand about DHS.
