School Mission Statement
Timucuan Elementary School (TES), the “Home of the Indians”, is located in the Westside of Jacksonville, Florida. The school was erected in 1956 under the leadership of Superintendent Iva T. Sprinkle. Timucuan Elementary is a neighborhood school and services approximately 600 students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. The students live in the surrounding community consisting of single-family homes, trailer parks, military housing, and various apartment complexes.
We have wonderful relationships with several business partners who support the teaching and learning at TES. In addition, TES receives timely support from our partnership with the Westside Full Service Schools non-profit organization.
Timucuan Elementary School offers a challenging and varied curriculum aligned with the standards-based model adopted by the District to meet the needs of all students. Our Learning Leaders emphasize content and performance standards throughout their daily lessons. They meet on a weekly basis by grade level or subject area for further training as observation and assessment data indicate those needs. Our instruction, rituals and routines are framed in a traditional elementary school design with knowledgeable grade level chairs who act as liaisons of their grade level. TES is has an art studio, music lab, computer lab, science lab, and media center which affords students an opportunity to develop in the arts areas and prepare students to thrive in a competitive global economy.
After earning an “A” of 526 accountability points on the 2009 FCAT and making Adequately Yearly Progress (AYP), TES enters the next school year with confidence to earn the additional points to achieve a higher “A” or 600 accountability points. TES has been set apart due to the ability to maintain faculty and staff with no turnover for the upcoming school year. A unique feature is the TES schedule, low class size, and increased Professional Learning Community (PLC) time for teacher collaboration and training. We have nine National Board Certified Teachers, 38 full-time teachers, an Instructional Coach who is the President of the Duval County Reading Council, seven full-time paraprofessionals, and one part-time paraprofessional.
Our theme this year is, “Treasure Learning” because we recognize the treasure in high expectations and operating in a spirit of excellence. Our Guidelines for Success is the L.E.A.D. (Learn, Excel, Achieve, and Dream) principle. TES students, faculty, and staff L.E.A.D. each and every day. If you have questions regarding our school and/or standards-based curriculum, then please feel free to contact us. We encourage you to come in for a tour and to volunteer. Together we all can make the biggest impact and difference in the lives of our students. Thank you for taking the time to visit our website and we hope you will find time to come visit us in person!
