Miami Sunset Senior High School
It is a pity that I didn't see this before I have the same problems as this parents, and the funny thing is that the ask you to be a concern parent but when you show you are, you can't get a hold of anybody including the principal. The school police you should see them the look like drug dealers. I believe the best thing would be if alll of this comments can be send to the School superintendent. Maybe we can get something done

LISA: I am a concerned parent of a teen who has been attending this school since 9th grade. He is well liked by many of the staff and never has had any problems. i agree with the above parent about the SERIOUS DRUG issues and how certain assistant principals DO bully students as well as favor some students no matter what they claim there rules and policy are. i am currently dealing with it. FOR this reason this school just keeps losing respect as well as rating. HOW CAN TEACHERS SUPPORT THE SCHOOL MISSION WHEN THERE ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF ARE THE FIRST TO CONTRADICT IT.

This school without counting other schools have a very high sense talking about the respect towards the students, teachers or any other member. Each one known their work there students to study ,teachers to teach and so on this is a very admirable school.

Ernesto R. Perez: Parents Beware. Be vigilant. Not happy as a parent of children who are attending and have attended this school. one of my children got involved with the wrong crowd there. The kid was a decent student in middle school, problems started about the sophomore year at Sunset. Peer pressure in high school is a defining time in a child's life. The ones attending now are doing great but tell me marijuana use is rampant with "allot"of students at the school. Don't know if that is a county wide problem but my kids tell me they continually "smell it in the stairwells and ___s bathrooms". We are Hispanic so my kids are exposed to Spanish at home yet my kids tell me this about some teachers "I don't understand my ____ teacher because she can't speak good English, she can't say words and stuff". This is the second year in a row my children complain to me about this issue. Administrators at the school ramrod their view of some issues just because it is their view, only using their feelings and poor logic to back their stance. No empirical data. Some school policy is in direct contradiction to Miami Dade County School Board policy. They come up with some convoluted excuse why it isn't. I can understand written Board policy. In my kids view one of the asst principals goes about his duty projecting an attitude similar to a bully. Ive seen glimmers of this attitude first hand. Its not all bad, some of the my children's teachers and counselors are wonderful. I can only go by what my kids say, and my few interactions with staff.
I wish I knew the answers to correct these shortcomings. Ask questions.

Miami Sunset Senior High School
I just graduated from Miami Sunset Senior High School. These past four years were great. My last year, 09-10, we were marked as a "hoodlum" school because of a riot but just beacuse that happened doesn't mean we're a horrible school. The teachers that taught me each had their goal of making me suceed. The friends I made are the ones you stay with for life. What I learned not just from teachers, but from personal experiences within school time is something that has made me mature and a better person. As far as security, they were and have been strict. Just because there's security that is friendlier and doesn't yell at you every five minutes your doing something wrong doesn't mean their not doing their job. I knew someone who was buddy to buddy with one of the security's and that same security caught him doing something wrong and took him straight to CSI. They know their job and they won't let any kid mess it up. The principal will always talk just a bit too much but hey, in the end she just wants to follow rules and make our school get better and better. Don't judge a school just for its negative side. Every single school has a bad side. It could be rated as one of the top ten schools, but it will still ahve its negativities that might change or might stay the same. In the end, in my experience, Sunset was great and left many memories. Good bye Sunset :')

Rafaela Garcia: In review all of the above comments, I must say that I am very concerned. I have 2 children attending Miami Sunset Senior High this year a freshman and a sophmore. I have notice when I visit the school there seems to be very little attention to the rules or protocol. I did see the youtube riot and this is very concerning to me. My kids are good kinds with good grades, but they have pier pressure and can turn at any time. I hope that this year with proper security and interest from the staff this can be overturned. I am a parent that is aware the the situation and would like to make a difference. Thanks.

I currently attend Sunset. This year was my freshman year, and this school BLEW MY MIND! It was horrible. The kids literally RUN THE SCHOOL, and especially after the Riot we had(Check youtube for sunsets riot videos), the kids now know they can do whatever! The Security is a JOKE, they do nothing but talk on the phones and text while fights breakout. Actually they can't even break up fights if its between two big guys because they are simply not trained for it and are little, brittle, and weak! There is no such thing as safety at this school, its everyone for themselves. We had hoodlums that have been in Juvy that attend sunset, cellphones are stolen every minute on the minute! &the DRUG USE is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I've never seen anything like it! Kids smoke weed on school property, smoke cigs, and snort cocaine. We have "ON DECK' DRUG DEALERS, I've seen this all with my own eyes! The teachers..pftt there more like students, so the education is also a JOKE! Please, for you childs safety, don't allow them to attend this school. These other comments are FLUFF. "oh this school is so much fun! its soo frEE". YEAH ITS FREE! YOUR FREE TO RUN AROUND&DO WHAT U WANT! I really hope this has helped you make the right choice for your child. Best wishes!

Miami Sunset Senior High School
I'm currently a Senior at MSSH. There is much to say about this school that is current news feed. However, before I comment on the school, I should give a brief bio of who I am. I'm a student involved in the Honors and Advance Placement program that actively participates in clubs such as Key Club and National Honor Society and much more. It can be unfortunate and embarassing to say at times that i do have that "knight pride." In the recent years Sunset has been deteriorating slowly. The 09-10 year has shown that MSSH is controlled by the student body rather than the administration which includes the assistant principals and principal. This year has been the "cherry on top" for the out of control hoodlums of the school. There have been an outrageous number of absences, disruptions, rebelion of the many school policies such as uniforms, and abhorent events. Riots have taken place and vandalization of the school is utterly ridiculous. The "Honors" program resembles regular courses in too many aspects: both student behavior and the teacher's performance. If you have poor FCAT scores, a poor GPA, or poor conduct then the road to success has been paved for you at Sunset. The ambitious students strive to get an education here. The path for them isn't paved for success. Instead, they must earn success by the limited resources that are provided for them-or us.If you're child isn't a football player or basketball player, then the school may not be the right fit for him/her. I suggest that you take a tour of the school during open hours so that you can see the real nature of sunset high and not just the fairytale that's offered in the bulletin curriculum. I hope that one day the school unleashes it's potential to be a good school and that it can providea better second home to its students. Best of luck to whom it may concern and I hope this honest review based on current events has helped.

A college prep school that offers a large AP program for any student that wants to earn college credit in high school. The academies are Law, Medicine, TV production, Engineering, and Informatiom technology. It's a much better option than an IB program. The sports program is amazing ; top 10 every year as well as many students receiving scholarships. Simply the best!!!

This is a great school. There are several AP and honors classes as well as extra curricular activities. The girls softball team is amazing, with many of the girls earning scholarships to college. The baseball team always ranks in the top ten. My children were prepared for college, when they graduated. Sunset is amazing.
