Banneker High School has undergone a major transformation in one school year. Frst, Banneker has an entirley new progressive, knowledgeable, and extremely professional administration with a clear focus on student achievement The administration first identified the need to improve student management and has done so to the level that is unprecedented. Students have fairly much conformed to the demands and requirements of a reformed environment, school climate, and culture. Banneker's typical day has become routine with a focus on teaching and learning. The evidence is clear that Banneker is very quickly rising to the level of the leading high school in South Fulton County. First, Banneker made AYP in 2009 on the first adminstration of the GHSGT the first year under the new administration. Only one other high school in South Fulton earned that distinction on the first administration. Second it also received the Governor's Cup for the most improvement on the SAT in the Region. Third, the EOCT scores at Banneker improved in several subjects by as much as 15 points--with almost all areas improving dramatically. On the Value-Added District Score Card, Banneker leads the entire FCS District in improvement in one of the sciences. Already this school term, Banneker has enjoyed a very succesful football, wrestling, and Basketball season, and has outperformed every high school in South Fulton County on the GHSGWT except one. 93% of the students passed the GHSGWT. As a member of the LSAC at Banneker, I am proud of this school and its recent acoomplishments. In fact, we are determined to return Banneker to the status it once enjoyed as the only high school in South Fulton County to have earned the tiltle of a State and National School of Excellence. Yes, we have those who cannot control their own children, do not value education, and want everyone managed except their children. Well, our new principal has worked in several troubled schools in Fulton for most of his career changing those schools one at a time. He is fair but tough on the students and staff. His main concern is student achievement in a well managed school environment. We are getting that and we are very pleased. If parents and/or students come to Banneker with something else in mind, please know that Banneker is not the school for them. We realize that public schools are for all who live within the attendance zones of the school, but Banneker demands student compliance with the established climate. Banneker honestly encourages parental input and support for the climate being established, even if it means we must change as parents. The students report that they like the new environment, eventhough, some do not like the extra two hours they must attend school each week at Banneker. However, they do understand the purpose behind the academic interventions that are now in place to improve all students academically. The Mighty Trojans are on the move! Join us or get out of the way!
