Douglas County High School Reviews

By a Former Student on

Douglas County High School has evolved since my freshman year (which was the 2009-2010 school year). I think a combination of things have helped DC become a better school. The growth of the IB Program and the new leadership of Principal Tim Scott have probably contributed immensely to this school's recent improvement. The AP Program will be expanding in the 2013-2014 school year as well due to the exceptional PSAT scores of minority students at DCHS. Trouble is found here only when students actively seek it out; those that are focused should be just fine, and I personally found that the diversity of the school helped broaden my perspective both as a person and as a learner.

The most challenging problem is the student population. The school has an IB program that could be the best thing that every happened in Douglas County, however, they attend school in an intimidating environment. Some teachers are very strict, often mean. I think this is because of the challenging physical environment and the need to appear tough in front of some pretty rough kids. Unfortunatley, this does nothing for the students who are there to succeed. My daughter feels intimadated by some teachers to the point of being afraid to ask a question because of their responses to other children.
I believe they should move the IB program away from this school. It would benefit the teachers and students by providing the open collaboration needed for the success of the students in the program.

SOME of the teachers are wonderful, but many of the administrators are on a power trip and are VERY unethical and it's supported by the school board.
