When I moved here in 1999, I was strongly cautioned against this school and its sister high school. We purchased a home in another school district on purpose to stay away from what was then a large, encompassing land area for these 2 schools. For years, I heard the comments and rumors about these schools. In 2005, I began being employed by the school system. Again, I stayed as far away from this school as possible. Never took the time to visit or research, just stayed away based on what other people were saying. In 2011, after being away from GA for 4 years, I was interviewed and accepted a non-teaching position at Henry County Middle School. My first day, I was completely terrified. Looking back, I'm not sure what I thought I would find--giant demons, wild kids, cowering teachers--I'm just not sure what I thought but I was scared because of all that I had heard. Imagine my surprise when I walked in to find a normal school, filled with normal kids. I saw teachers who were striving like the other teachers I worked with in the past at "better" schools and who were teachers just like me--doing more than was required to help kids reach their personal and educational goals. In my non-teaching position, I work with families, community, and school/s to encourage, foster, and build support and pride in our school. Henry County Middle School is no different than any other school in the county, except that it is the only Title 1 middle school at this time. I know because I sent my kids to them, work with them, and support them with my tax dollars even when I am not employed by them. ALL schools require PARENTAL support regardless of the socio-economic climate in a given school--the better the support, the better the school, at any level. We have a new principal who has been here since 2010 and has led her staff and faculty to new heights and continues to set goals for HCMS. We strive DAILY to change the perception of people in regard to our school. Actions are the only way that will happen--and they are happening now. It is on its way to passing some of the "better" schools in the county this year. In addition, a PTO was formed in 2011--the first time in the history of this 50+ year old school that a PTO was here. Why wasn't it before? Well, I can only say that someone new was aware that it was necessary. The PTO has begun WELCOMING parents to take part in their kids' education--like all the other schools in this county. We communicate with our families in a variety of ways--and like other schools, some respond and some do not. If I could have anything I wished for it would be that for every person who tears us down, we would have double the number of people to come forward to HELP us help their kids. If you are in our district, or any school district in Henry County, be prepared to became engaged in whatever school your student attends. They need it, and so do we. Don't believe everything you hear--you yourself make a difference wherever you go.

The school is the worst in the county - as of 2011-2012 school year it is one of the poorest schools. The education there is horrible! The administrators are the worst. I don't recommend anyone send their child to this school by any means possible. Every parent I know has tried to transfer their child out - white, black and other!
