Pahoa Elementary School Reviews

By a Parent on

Pahoa Elem let me down as a mother.  My seven year old was being bullied for the last couple years there, and after the last incident I finally had to withdraw her from the school.

It's not like I'm not an active parent, I have spoken to teachers, support staff, office staff, administrators including principal and vice principal, mediators, councilors and even temporary or part time staff.  But it wasn't working.

A couple of weeks back I received a call from the office saying my child had missed the bus because she was goofing of with her friends.  As I was leaving my driveway another parent, my neighbor, stopped me to ask if my daughter was ok.  She told me she had been assaulted at school and she had been in a conference and that was why she missed the bus.  The same boy who had assaulted her a few weeks ago had attacked her again, probably since I found out no reports from the first attack had been filled.

When I got to school and asked what was going on I got a lot of blank looks, and 'we don't know what happened' or anyone for me to talk to.  I withdrew her on the spot, feeling as though the school was being untruthful with me.

I never did get a call from them that week, even though I requested one.  Not the next week either, so I called the district office.  Lo and behold I finally got a call, from another councilor, one I hadn't met.  She was shocked to find out that my daughter  had been previously assaulted and bullied by this boy, and others at the school.  There wasn't anything in her file to indicate that, due to Pahoa Elem interesting way of tracking incidents.  Apparently only the perpertrators info is kept on file, so my daughters file had no incidents in it.

When I was able to finally sit down with administrators, three weeks later, it was blame the victim time.  At least until they realized I had a point.  Problems is, I doubt they will change.  More and more children will be bullied because of the schools lack of consistancy in reporting and tracking incidents.

I didn't appreciate being told by the principal at the start of our meeting that the reason I never received contact from them until I went over their heads was because I had pulled her from the school.  Apparently since she wasn't enrolled there the principal did not feel like I had a right to know what had happened and if steps were being taken to fix it.  I think she thought she was doing me a favor to sit down with me and talk.  It was the usuall song and dance with them, and of course she wanted to know what I had done, and what my daughter had done to stop the bullying.  Problem was she couldn't place blame on us once she realized we had done everything we were supposed to and they were the ones who had failed.  Then it was time to blame the teacher and the councilors and the mediators for failing.

Fact is, Administration runs the school, and they are the ones tht let me down.

Send your children elsewhere if you can.
