GLORIA MAYES: ST. JOHN IS AN EXCELLENT SCHOOL THAT COVERS THE BASIC
SUBJECTS AND THAT WHICH IS NOT BASIC, LIKE THE ORATORY
CONTESTS, WHICH ALLOWED THE STUDENTS TO EXPRESS
THEIR FEELINGS BY ORIGINAL POEMS OR ORIGINAL WORKS TO
AN AUDIENCE. I LOVED THE FACT THAT ALL THE STUDENTS HAD TO PARTICIPATE, FROM PRE-SCHOOL TO 8TH GRADE. THIS GIVES EVEN THE SHYEST CHILD THE OPPORTUNITY TO OVERCOME HIS SHYNESS BY 8TH GRADE. THEY ALWAYS HAD AN EXCELLENT CHOIR WHO WENT TO SING AT DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CITY. OF COURSE THERE WAS THE SPELLING BEE AND SCIENCE FAIRS EACH YEAR AND BOOK REPORTS. AT ONE TIME FOR EVERY 5 BOOK REPORTS COMPLETED, THE STUDENT WOULD
RECEIVE A PERSONAL PIZZA FROM PIZZA HUT. THAT WAS VERY
EXCITING AND WOULD PUSH THE CHILD TO READ MORE.
WHEN MY GRANDSON, DARION, WAS IN 4TH GRADE, THE CLASS DID A PLAY BASED ON THE LIFE OF DR. KING AND THE CHILDREN WERE EXCELLENT IN THEIR VARIOUS ROLES. HE GRADUATED IN 2007, VALADICTORIAN, AND I FEEL THE KNOWLEDGE AND CONFIDENCE HE ATTAINED AT ST. JOHN HAS ENABLED HIM TO RECEIVE HIGH HONORS AT MT. CARMEL H.S. FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS. HE IS NOW A SENIOR AND WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO HIS GRADUATION NEXT YEAR, MAY, 2011.
THOUGH MOST OF HIS TEACERS ARE NO LONGER THERE, I AM
GLAD WE PICKED ST. JOHN FOR HIM TO ATTEND KINDERGARTEN IN 1998.
