Edward Hynes Charter School Reviews

school only cares about clique kids

By a Parent on

Academically this school is a mostly good school. Your child will have access to many valuable resources. Sometimes, the school makes choices to benefit their scores/ranking at the sake of the child. This can be most often seen in testing practices and reading placement. If you child is an above grade level reader they will be placed in a class with higher grade level reading materials, which  may not be developmentally or emotionally appropriate for the student. This is a common complaint I have heard.

This is "one of the best" schools in NOLA, but how much is that really saying? Recess and lunch time are very short. Often kids do not have time to even finish their lunches or burn up extra energy after sitting in a 90 minute reading class.  Bullying is overlooked.

The school is run by a clique, which consists of the CEO/principal and her sorority sisters. It sounds as though I am making this up, but sadly I am not. Do not plan on being a room parent or having a real voice if you are not a part of this group. Also, many teachers are a part of this same clique, and some are even allowed to stay and teach regardless of multiple parent complains and questionable behaviors in class.

The CEO/principal at PTO meeting has expressed her motivation which is money. She has stated that she is motivated to fill every seat in the school because an empty seat= dollars lost. Not empty seat= a child who could be getting a great education. Also, while planning the gala other classist sentiments were implied.

Not a good school for kids with any special needs

Reviewed on

The teacher to student ratio is not accurate at all.  My grandson (who has a speech impediment and mild learning disability) is in a class with 27 other students.  Because of these issues, he is a constant target for bullies.  He is supposed to be getting federally imposed accommodations for his disability, but is not getting them.  Also, with the full on implementation of Common Core standards at this school, kids (at least in my grandson's class) are starting to have problems keeping up with things in class.  We, as a family, have decided to take him out of Hynes...not a good fit.
