Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School Reviews
I am not sure what the Parent on June 17 is referring to. We live in a district with one of the top ranked high schools in the country but we still send our child to AMSA instead.
We like AMSA because they expect a lot from ALL the kids vs. just the ones on the upper quarter of the Bell curve. We have had several conversations with the leadership at AMSA on curriculum and on our child's performance and never felt that we were being ignored nor had an inability of getting access to the proper administrators.
Yes, the inevitable tradeoff here is challenging kids and holding them accountable for performance is more stressful than other alternatives. However, we believe it is better to work with kids in high school on this than have them confronted with this stress in college with no support from home.
AMSA still suffers from poor leadership on its Board and in its Administration. The school does do some things well and students are bright and highly motivated. If only the same could be said about the Leadership. No respect for students or parents with a Leadership that believes it is perfect and can do no wrong. Students are afterthought.
Shame as it had real promise. Students will do fine - but unfortunately are treated with no respect and have no opportunity for expression. Running a school via fear and intimidation will only last for a time.
My daughter is in her first year here and I've been so impressed. I've heard some negative stories about how it was in the past, but I can only go on what I've experienced. The curriculum is outstanding and although there is a lot of homework, teachers have been kind and helpful while my child adjusts to a new environment of rigor. Communication from the school and teachers has been excellent. Most of all, my child has never been happier in school. Well done, AMSA!
This school's short disappointing history is an outstanding example of adults' unwillingness to find common language for the sake of our children.
Neither executive administration nor the Board thought about students and their parents who once decided to trust the group of some people calling themselves professionals in the field of education.
Sad! Because such a sensitive area as children education had been turned into a subject of a primitive business.
Parents, think twice before you chose a school for your loved ones.
This school has turned out to be a huge disappointment. The charter is brilliant and the promise of a superior education led us away from our school district. Year 1 & 2 were delivered as promised.
The problem is that the Board interferred with the exectutive administration preventing them the autonomy to run the school. Then the executive admin team either left or were replaced by unqualified/unskilled admin.
The quality of the school has gone down the drain. Original students and teaching staff are stampeding for the doors.
Too bad. There was a lot of potential. Hopefully the Dept. of Ed will step in before its too late.
