Western International High School Reviews

As a teacher, I feel privileged to work at Western International High school in Detroit. Here I have the valuable opportunity to work with smart kids who are conscious of their challenges (among them the disruptive minority) and work hard to get the education they need to become productive members of their communities. One of the pluses about working at Western is the fact that we have the support of the parents, most of whom have passed through epic struggles to come to Detroit searching for a better future for their kids; they understand the value of education, respect teachers and demand respect from their children.

All three of my children have now graduated from Western Int'l High School, Detroit, MI.  All three have been honor students throughout their education years.  Granted, I am writing here about Western, but their high school years are the hardest to keep them motivated to always do their best.  I agree with everything the previous reviewer has said about our school.  I could not have put it any more clearly.  With all of the problems, obstacles, temptations our part of the city is plagued with, Western is STILL the gem of the city when it comes to our children's education.  An INVOLVED PARENT/GUARDIAN is ESSENTIAL to any student's success.  I have always been very involved in the LSCO's and PTA's in their schools, been to just about every parent/teacher conference, help out with fundraisers, support my children's sports teams, etc...  When your child sees you want to be involved and actually take the time to do it, you, as a parent, have planted a seed in their memories, GOOD memories.  They, in turn, will do the same with their children.  I watched my parents go to monthly parent meetings, school events, get elected as PTA officers, etc...   That is where I learned it.  It was important to me.  I have seen it be as important to each of my own children throughout their school years.  They have had some EXCELLENT instructors, mentors, teachers, etc.  They have taken an initiative, early on in high school, to make sure by the time they were seniors, they did all that was necessary to complete their education before college.  They have had intelligent, caring, DEDICATED teachers who will go the extra mile for a student.  When there was a problem, it was dealt with head on, immediately and everyone was the better for it.  Western Int'l H.S. is a GREAT school with a dedicated staff who works as a team, leading our students by example.   My three children have wonderful memories of their years at Western.  They visit their former teachers when they can.  I can honestly say some of the teachers are like family to me.  We have mutual respect for each other.  I hope that many future students join us at Western and make some memories for themselves.  The teachers are AMAZING!  I would do it all over again, the very same way, if I was given a second chance.  I think my children would agree with me.

My daughter is a senior at Western International High School, which is located very near our home in southwest Detroit.  Despite a constant struggle with a disruptive portion of the student body, and in a district fraught with many school board and financial ills, my daughter has always enjoyed this school and has wonderful lifelong memories to take with her on into adulthood.  I have been very impressed with the dedication and genuine concern for students shown by the teachers and staff at this school.  From the award-winning security personnel (one of whom provides a yearly scholarship in memory of a child), personable office staff, pro-student advocacy of the counselors (one of whom provides a yearly scholarship in memory of a child), truly top-notch "born" teachers who are on a mission, even providing a college financial aid specialist, travelling with students to attend and compete and win nationwide contests in math, science and language,  a principal who will fight to provide whatever it takes to support her students and their efforts, a dedicated PTSA working tirelessly and sacrificially to boost every student and provide numerous opportunities for school-to-community activities, class trips, trips to visit colleges, important workshops for students and parents, and much more; everyone here does whatever it takes when it comes to the students, providing for their success, whether in the classroom, on the varied athletic arenas, on stage, on trips to foreign countries via language clubs, and ultimately  in life whatever college or career path students take.  I thank God for Western International High School.

"They have a newly built building which is absolutely gorgeous and very well laid out. In general the staff is caring, but firm. Only bad thing is that parent involvement is not encouraged. Yet!!"
