Allen Village Charter School Reviews

By a Former Student on

I went to this school for the 7th grade and until September of the 8th grade. The school had great academics and provided a challenge for me instead of the normal class work that was easy for me at other schools. They had a disiplinary system that was corrupt. We had to be perfect. If we used the bathroom at unscheduled times more than twice a quarter we were given a detention. There is not a real gymnasium. There isn't a lunch room. For lunch you had to eat in the classroom. When you had gym class you were to change in the classroom. The classroom switched classes as a class. I was not taught social studies everyday. Up until my 8th grade year there wasn't a school library, but there was homework to read every day. Summer school was required and was dismissed at the very end of June. July was the only "summer time" we had because August 8th school started. And the whole month of August is half days. I quit going to Allen village because I didn't feel safe at the school. I had a pair of converse that came to my knees. I had my uniform pants over them. When I changed in my class for gym, my teacher Rhonda Reddick said that I was in violation for wearing boots. She signed my planner and sent me to gym. While in gym, the class was running around the empty classroom. I was told to run and I couldn't keep up with the other girls so I slowed to a walk. I was told by the gym teacher to go get my planner because I was being defiant. I gave her my planner and sat down like she asked. At the end of gym my teachers Ms.Reddick and Ms.Lee were asking me questions. I had a terrible cough and a fever for the past week and I still went to school because of the attendance policy. They threatened to call the division of child services on my mother if I didn't show up. But back to what I was saying. I was in tears and a couple had dropped on the floor. They handed me a tissue and said you're spreading germs. I said you guys haven't cared all week with my coughing and spreading germs. Ms. Reddick Said this is the reason we were still allowed to hit children as teachers. So, I got my stuff and walked out of the school. Never looked back. Please do not send your children here.

Allen Village is a great school with a great curriculum.  Like all schools, Allen Village has it flaws.  A parent should have the right to agree or disagree with a teacher(s) decision.  A parent should also have the right to be a part of the school.  My children have attended Allen Village for two years and are not returning.  We can deal with the discipline, we can deal with the dress code, we can deal with the homework/class work; what we will not tolerate is the dictatorship that is allowed.  You will not tell me “To do as we say”, I am an adult and I have the right to my opinion.  The children cannot to fend for self and as a parent; I feel it is my duty.  The leader of the school may have the credentials to run the school but lacks compassion and mercy.  The leader feels that she is God and everyone should fear her.  Too much, power will destroy a great thing.  Allen Village is a great school; but no school is great without the support and dedication of the parents or without the student s’ ability and desire to learn.  What will destroy Allen Village is the inability to honor one’s opinion, ideas, or thoughts.  I wish nothing but the best for Allen Village, but the term “VILLAGE” only pertains to the leader and her chosen.

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE. I cannot stress this enough. For so many reasons. They believe every child should learn on the same level. My daughter was homeschooled for 2 years and she was not ready for 6th grade, I requested she be put in 5th grade and they put her in 6th and she could not keep up with the work or homework. My daughter would work on her homework for 6 hours after school and still not finish. She was issued several detentions for this!  If the children can not keep up they enforce mandatory afterschool tutoring. They have no concern or regard for single working parents. You must provide transportation if they make your child go to tutoring. If you cannot provide transport one day for a detention they will not reschedule they simply suspend your child. They have no special education, or tolerance for challenged children whatsoever. A few other things.... Children are not allowed to use the restroom more than once a day unless they get their planner signed... which could cause detention. They do not allow the children to drink more than 8 oz of water a day. And this is only if they bring the water bottle the school gives them. If not all they drink ALL DAY is their milk at lunch... which they eat in their rooms because there is no cafeteria, or gym. The girls change for gym in the classroom and her teacher let a male teacher in the room before my daughter was all the way dressed.  And then sent a letter home to me stating my daughter was inappropriate...? They do not allow backpacks. THE ONLY THING THEY TEACH IS HOW TO PASS THE MAP TEST. My daughters English teacher sent home a letter to parents whose children missed words on the spelling test more than once (because everyone had to pass 100% or they all had to keep doing the same words)... she marked a word wrong on my daughters test that was spelled right! And the teacher had terrible spelling and gramatical errors on the letter!  Please look elsewhere for a school to avoid the stress I went through for the 3 months my daughter attended this school. You will regret sending your child here. I know I did.

I have had my daughter in Allen Village since she was in the third grade. At first I thought the discipline was too much, but then I realized a strict environment in these days & times is much needed. My daughter has excelled in all her subjects with the help of all the staff members. It is a small school perfect for learnong. No school is flawless you either love it or hate it & I am proud to so I love that my daughter attends Allen Village.

Our three chilren currently attend Allen Village but will not next year. We feel the school Is taking on an increasingly parental role, rather than focusing on enriching and stimulating intellectual persuits and love of learning. Discipline is over the top and recess is practically non-existent. Also they are completely ignorant when it comes to special education and developmental disabilities.

I've been going to this school since 5th grade. I felt lonely but the teachers made you feel welcomed. It has one of the highest MAP scores in Kansas City. I like the school because they care for you and your education and will do anything to help you better. Its a great school overall..

This school is so great my daughter did'nt like it at first but then she realized that they were giving her disipline and that could help in the long run, and now she loves it. I'm very proud that she has friends that really care and understand her and most importantly have goals.
