I attended Mann Elementary School from 1992 to 1994 for all of first and most of second grade. I was beaten up regularly. I had been punched, kicked, and even thrown down stairs. The walks home were horrendous, as children from Mann school were trying to start "gangs" in the 5th grade.
When I was switched to a county school I was incredibly far behind in most subjects. I also remember that at the end of the 93 school year and beginning of the next - our recesses for whatever reason were about two hours long. That's great for kids, I guess, but all there is to play on is a large black sea of asphalt.
