Calais School Reviews

Excellent program

Reviewed on

The Calais School's Career and Technical Education program is excellent. Career exploration, gaining important career skills in five different areas, guidance counselor, therapeutic supports, job coach, work experiences on and off the campus.  There is nothing else like it in the state.  Highly recommend The Calais School.

The Calais School has done amazing things for my child! They worked with my child to improve his negative behaviors. I am so thankful for them and the work that they do

Not willing to work with IEP!!! They make the kids follow the state guide lines for their grade level regardless of what the IEP says what grade level they should be at.  The new for 2012 Principal is bulling the students with how she deals with them.  If your child is not working at grade level I would look at another school!

Over three years ago my husband and I were looking for a school that would suit the needs of our son who has diverse learning disabilities and ADD.  We had looked into several schools that would suit our son’s needs and became discouraged by not finding one that would be the right fit. Fortunately a friend recommended we take a look at The Calais School.  Upon meeting with several staff members at the school and hearing what type of services would be offered to help our son, we knew The Calais School was the missing piece to our puzzle!  Our son is just completing his third year at The Calais School.  Due to the positive learning environment at The Calais School, coupled with cutting edge learning material, we have seen wonderful growth academically.  The teachers are very well trained in helping a child to succeed while building their confidence. Due to the nurturing environment at The Calais School, our son’s confidence has grown and he now realizes that he can achieve success.

I have been an employee of The Calais School for the past 13 years of my 27 years as a special education teacher.  I have worked in both the private and public sector.  I have watched students in this school grow and excel, year after year, day after day and minute after minute.  The programs offered at this school encourage social and emotional growth like I have never seen before. As a chaperone at most of the high school programs, such as swimming lessons, hip hop dance lessons, golf lessons, school dances, fundraisers, proms etc,  I have witnessed many special life-changing moments in the lives of our students.

After 3 years at Calais, I have seen the lives of many students miraculously turn around…not because someone felt sorry for them but because they saw their potential and mentored them.  That is why I came out of retirement to work here.  The students at Calais enjoy bowling, swimming, golf, cheerleading, basketball, softball, and a great physical education program.  Then there is the Science Fair, Lower School Honors Breakfast, High School Honors, the SMARTBoard, Prom, IMAX at Liberty Science Center, Teen Arts at County College, TERRABite PC Academy, FunPlex, SummerFest, Frelinghuysen Arboretum, and Earth Day?  All of this, and more, is thanks to the wonderful teaching and counseling staff at Calais who really care and make a difference in the students' lives.

[I think that] Calais school is by no means a therapeutic school. They are not willing or able to teach children with true disabilities the coping skills and they need to help regulate their own behavior. The behavior plan instills fear in children that is extremely counterproductive to behavioral growth. Their staff often uses restraints instead of working with the children in a positive manner.

I pulled my child out of the school as their behavior program and team of counselors were far from adequate.

I have worked at the Calais School.  I felt sorry for the children attending school here.  There is no recess, the "executives" are paid extravagant salaries, the kids don't change clothes for gym class, pathetic, ancient materials for the kids to use, no programs they advertise and claim to have, no recess, they are definitely NOT organized, and feel they should be audited by the state of NJ.
