About This School

Bishop Kearney High School is a Catholic, college preparatory school for young women sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph.  Its tradition for excellence offers the resources for personal enrichment in intellectual, social, spiritual, cultural and athletic pursuits.  We endeavor to educate a new generation of women leaders, capable of shaping the future with vision, charity, understanding and concern for all humanity, in a safe and moral environment.

Kearney's academic program offers a full range of Advanced Placement, Honors, and Regents courses as well as 46 new online course offerings. There are resource centers in every department including Catholic Studies, English, Fine Arts, Language (Italian and Spanish), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies in order to provide each student the best opportunity to excel. Students have an adviser to help them at every point in their journey from transitioning to Kearney to college and career preparation.100% of the class of 2014 attends college and 77% of them received almost $20 million dollars in academic scholarships and performed almost 20,000 hours of community service.

We encourage our students to pursue individual and leadership talents and skills through participation in the many extracurricular, athletic and service activities offered at the school. There are over 20 student clubs including a student operated television station, a school newspaper, yearbook, stage crew, and more. Our sports teams include Basketball, Boosters, Cheerleading, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Track, and Volleyball. In the ’13 -’14 school year, our Indoor Track team, Varsity Basketball team, and Swim team were named the Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan Champions! Additionally, students can partake in our student internship program and financial literacy certification program in order to prepare for life after high school.

This year, Kearney has a new administration. President, Dr. Margaret Minson states, "There are a lot of changes at Bishop Kearney, but one of the most valuable is the appointment of Ms. Elizabeth Guglielmo as Principal. She is a gifted and talented educator with almost 20 years experience as a teacher and an administrator. She was formally the assistant principal at Bay Side high school, and she came to Kearney because of her strong belief in Catholic education".

We have started our 1:1 Chromebook implementation, added SMART Boards in our classrooms, and are officially a  'Google school’. With the continual updates to meet the challenges of the 21st century, our students become academically and personally strong.

BKHS is a wonderful school with excellent teachers and a wide array of clubs and activities. The school prepares students for life beyond high school in many aspects, especially academically. Help in any subject matter is readily available for any student who needs it. Teachers are caring and willing to devote time to their students. Many teachers have been at the school for 10 years or more and they take pride in their work. Other Catholic high schools may have more cachet, but if it's results you're after look no farther. Kearney girls excel which is why so many colleges and universities are eager to accept Kearney graduates. Serious students looking to pursue a career are developed and encoraged here. A Catholic education is not cheap so if you're looking to reap an excellent return on your investment Kearney is the only school you should consider. If you're only interested in raising empty-headed fashionistas send them to Fontbonne.

My daughter is a freshman at the school, I am glad that she is happy to go to school. The staff seem willing to help and there is ample opportunity for the students to receive help in any subject area where they need help. There also seems to be alot of school spirit and camaraderie amongst the students.
