The New York State Assessments are annual tests used to measure a student's mastery of the state's grade-level academic standards. The tests are also used to evaluate schools and determine each school's accountability status.

Students in grades 3 through 8 are assessed in English language arts and math, in grades 4 and 8 in science, and in grades 5 and 8 in social studies.

Students receive a score of level 1 through level 4. The goal is for 90% of students to score at or above level 3, the level of proficiency.

Haverstraw Middle School

Needs to be updated, very old facilities. Students are very diverse and need a lot of individualization. READ 180 could be a reading intervention program that would help to boost low achieving readers. Also System 44 for a phonics approach to very low beginning readers at high interest level for middle schools.
