About the NYSA
What is it?
The New York State Assessments are annual tests used to measure a student's mastery of the state's grade-level academic standards. The tests are also used to evaluate schools and determine each school's accountability status.
Which Grades and Subjects?
Students in grades 3 through 8 are assessed in English language arts and math, in grades 4 and 8 in science, and in grades 5 and 8 in social studies.
How is it Scored?
Students receive a score of level 1 through level 4. The goal is for 90% of students to score at or above level 3, the level of proficiency.

What is it?
The New York State Regents Examinations are a series of subject specific tests that measure a student's level of proficiency in each of the subject areas tested.
Which Grades and Subjects?
High school students must pass at least five tests in the following subjects: English language arts, math, global history and geography, US history and government, living environment, chemistry, earth science, physics and foreign language.
How is it Scored?
Every New York high school student must pass (score a 65 or above) at least five Regents examinations to receive a high school diploma. The goal is for all students to pass the tests.

Edward W. Primus, III: As you may know P.S. 184 or Shuang Wen has been in the papers and in the media a lot in the past few months. This is due to a change of administration and a group of parents who feeo that they are entitled to attending a school which is not in their district. The name Shuang Wen means Dual Language a name that has been duplicitous and not true up until recently with the new administration working to attain this goal. In the past it was not true due to the fact that it was a regular public school with a Chinese After-school program run by SWAN. The new admilnistration has taken the view that education is about equity and no child should have to pay $1,000.00 to learn Chinese in a public school.
The facts speak for themselves for in order to say you are a Dual Language school you would have to have content which qualifes by some standard to show you are teaching studentss to learn Chinese. P.S. 184 has never in the past had these standards. I cou;d say more but I think I will leave it here, and just say that I and many others wish the new administration luck and will do all we can to support this real approach to teaching children Chinese and English.

(a former student): It's a really good school because all students learn how to respect each other. Shuang Wen helps students prepare for their future so that they become successful. The demand for multilingual people for the society has increased so Shuang Wen has a tremendous benefactor; the skill to speak/read/write mandarin Chinese.
