PS 290 Manhattan New School
I am not normally one to write a review for a school, but I just read through the somewhat scathing review at the bottom of this thread and wanted to add my two cents.  MNS is an amazing school.  The administration, the teachers, the staff and the students are really thoughtful and intelligent people.  MNS provides a warm and nurturing environment where teachers have high expectations and instruction is not only rigorous but highly individualized.  That said, perhaps the most important thing that children are taught at MNS is to respect one another and treat each other with kindness.  I have two children who attend the school and I wouldn't sent them anywhere else.

This is an amazing school with many options for kids. While being casual the teachers also set rules and goals for students.

This was a good school, but not any more! I found it out too late! I'm very disappointed with the Principal's administration. Most senior teachers were gone. I was told that this school was strong at writing. But after senior teachers left, it became history. Lucky to the children who graduated. The way they teach Math is impossible to survive in the middle school. For example, my friend's child learns 2-digits multiplication / division at 3rd Grade at another public school at Queens. At MNS they teach this at 4th &5th Grade. The social study and science program are very weak, too. Students have no individual table and chair to sit on. One mother complain about after her child goes to this school, she doesn't know how to hold a pencil in the right way. I feel guilty of sending my child to this baby sitting like school. I don't know how can it get an 'A'. The academic is awful. It doesn't meet our expectation at all (according to most parents). Yes, the teachers are very nice maybe too nice. I give it a 2-stars instead of 1-star because most children have good manner, and so far the school is safe never hear about any gang activity, and this is the only good thing about the school is the families & children. Most children are very good behaved. The state wide scores haven't fall apart is because of the parents take care of their children's academic themselves. It's wasted of time sending my child over there. I wish I could find out earlier. Hope you don't make the same mistake.
