French Road Elementary School Reviews
French Road Elementary School (FRES) has a very enthusiastic group of staff, educators, administrators & families that help support the school in every way possible. The faculty and staff are at every community event, such as Homecoming, Fundraisers, Baseball Opening Day, and Field Days, where they have the opportunity to be dunked in the dunk tank! Academically, our district is one of the best in New York State. At this point in our educational system, 3rd through 5th grade, the children are taught with state-of-the-art equipment and with the latest innovative techniques. Teachers are perpetually taking continuing education courses to help each student reach his or her potential. We also have each child sign "The Purple Hands Pledge." Simply, this is a Golden Rule/Keep Your Hands To Yourself pledge that reminds students to respect one another. This theme is carried out through the three years they experience at FRES. One of the local Girl Scout Troops is building a Purple Hands Garden in the courtyard outside the library that will feature purple flowers, a part of the pledge written on a wall and hand-print flowers painted on the wall as well. This will be a peaceful place for students to read. Speaking of the library, ours was voted number one in Rochester, NY, and won a prize! The prize money purchased an outdoor sofa that will go into the Purple Hands garden! With the excellent librarian and her assistant as well as help from parent volunteers the library is an organized and nurturing place for students to learn. Nutritionally, the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) has created "Tasty Tuesdays." One Tuesday per month, volunteers from the PTSA offer samples of different types of fruits and vegetables for the children to try.
Since, we have many residents in our district studying at the various universities and institutions, we have an incredibly diverse student body. Children from all over the world, speaking many different languages impart their own worldly knowledge and experiences within the school and the classrooms. We also celebrate Jewish holidays in our district. Outside of some of the districts just outside of NYC, ours is one of the few upstate, let alone western NY, districts to recognize the Jewish high holy days and provide the time off from school for familes.
The arts are an important aspect of the curriculum at FRES as well. As fourth graders, each students has the opportunity to try out an instrument and play one for an academic year. There are also programs for those who would like to continue through the summer months. We also have a number of bands, an orchestra and a chamber group at our school. And, finally, with the problem of childhood obesity running rampant, FRES students have Physical Education classes four days per six-day cycle and recess each and every day! It is a great school, and I am proud to be a parent of two French Road Elementary School students!
