Scarsdale Middle School Reviews
Pressure-cooker, negative environment
As a parent, I am deeply disappointed with SMS. They make no effort to transition the 6th grade kids from the small, nurturing elementary school into a large competitive "factory-like" middle school. For what I pay to live here, I did not sign up for huge classes and hours of "busy-work" homework. They pile on work for its own sake. The culture of this school is toxic. Unless you are a Type-A Tiger Mom who wants their child to do hours and hours of homework (weekends included), get tested nearly every day, and have a joyless educational experience, go somewhere else. The teachers don't seem to communicate at all regarding multiple tests and large assignments (this has been true for all 3 of my children). We have had nightmarish assignment and test pile-ups because one hand does not know what the other is doing there. The the teachers are given carte blanche to teach whatever they want, resulting in some teachers under the delusion that they are teaching college-level classes to 12 year-olds. The expectations are not realistic for this developmental level. It is as if they no understanding of what true learning is, and think that pressure-cooker=rigorous.
WOW this has been the best experience of my life, yet, tough GO BUTLER HOUSE!!
This school is very challenging. The curriculum can be advanced for even a student in a higher grade level at another school, but here it is taken in stride. The work is very hard, but very rewarding as well because the district is so competitive and difficult.
Scarsdale Middle School is a very difficult school to attend. Many of the classes there are hands-on, and many of the teachers are funny, so you get along well in classes. However, they will not be easygoing if you forget your homework or fail a test. The standards at this school are very high, and since it is very costly to be able to bring your child to Scarsdale Middle School, that child should be a devoted hard-worker who is willing to give up sports and other events to complete their academics, and should have supportive parents who, even if they can't help them with the work, will be able to support them and make sure they know how hard they work.
i go to scarsdale middle school and i think it is a great experience. we learn about the basic academics, and there are tones of extracurricular activities. the district also offers many activities and this school has all the proper facilities and teachers for jobs. we learn languages, health, family and consumer sciences, technology, and art are some of the basic extracurriculars. we also have an extended music program with a section called "exploring music" which is pretty self explanatory. The school is very independent, has amazing teachers with a low staff to student ratio, and its just fun to be there!
