From the outside, Lakota schools appear to be excellent district, and that is why my family and I moved to this area. We soon learned that one cannot judge a book by its cover. On the outside, Lakota's "excellent" rating seem encouraging, but we soon realized the true horrors within the district. I have been in Lakota schools for 5 years now and each day I get dumber and dumber. Lakota schools would not do ANYTHING to advance me into higher level courses even though we had the support of my outstanding grades and teacher recommendations. We ended up paying hundreds of dollars just so I could advance into a course that actually taught material and didn't just assign busy-work. The counselors we have been exposed to have been downright uncooperative and refuse to help. The school rules are NOT enforced. Cell phones are banned yet I see 15 on average in every class: and that's out of a class of 20-30. Not only is texting common but cell phones create an easy way to cheat. Last year I witnessed repeated cheating in a class and contacted the teacher and counselor. Nothing was done but a remake of the test, out in the hallway, with no teacher supervision. They might as well have just told the student to cheat right in front of them. Cheating is extremely common and the teachers turn away. Many teachers assign homework but don't enforce its completion. I have had my graphing calculator (pricing around $100) stolen from me as well as a Vera Bradley (around $30) pencil bag stolen. When contacted, administrators did nothing to address the situation. Dress code violations are extremely common. No rules are enforced. Security is not a main priority. This district is not worth anything. Now, while they struggle to pass the levy, I see just how much waste goes on within the school. Teachers throw away stacks of papers each day, the 3M projectors stay on all class period with no use, the air conditioning creates freezer like conditions that are in no way saving money. Lakota parents may see this district as a wonderful oppurtunity for their children, but as a student, I see everything from the inside. Don't judge a book by its cover and don't support Lakota School District.
