JohnC: Academically, CAK does a decent job; however, there are problems. The school has some of the same problems that the public schools have. There are drugs, but they are prescription pills brought from home. There is a problem with bullying and descrimination at CAK. My daughter attended CAK for 4 years and we attributed her becoming increasingly self-conscious and depressed to normal teen angst. During her final year (HS freshman) at CAK she finally told my wife and I some of what she had experienced there and begged us to let her go to our public school. I naively reported it to the principle and two teachers. When I finally called to have school records transferred out, a school employee asked why we were leaving and I told the person. That person searched and could find no record of any reports or complaints by me about bullying or harassment. To be fair, the administrator to whom the reports were made left the school the next year. The two teachers with whom I spoke about the problems are still there, though.
While the academics aren't quite as good in the public school, my daughter has many friends-many Christian friends- and she is happy. She is a senior now, and has slowly shared more details of her experiences at CAK. My wife and I have been heartbroken about what she experienced.
Bottom line: if your family is wealthy and influencial, drive very expensive cars and live on the lake, you may fit in. However, if you are like us and have to take a second job to pay the tuition at CAK, your child may have a rough time. The culture of the school is very insular. There are other Christian schools in Knoxville--look around.

I am a mother of 3 graduates and one current student of Christian Academy. My children loved CAK. We went the public school route at first and ran into the problems of some teachers that did not care, influences that I did not want my children to be around, and just feeling like I was not able to express what my family needed. I didn't experience any of this when we changed over to CAK. My children went to exceptable colleges and universities. They make excellent grades. One is now in graduate school and two of my children went on to play sports for universities. Many people stop and tell me that my children are some of the most impressive young adults they have ever met. I give God the credit for sending us to CAK. If you think you can't afford the tuition think again you can't afford not to send your children to Christian Academy. The spiritual influence alone is worth the cost.

StaceyB: In response to the first review, I went to public school K-12. I then attended Carson-Newman College, and there I met many students that attended CAK. I will say with out a doubt that all of these students were much more ahead of us public school kids in the college courses. We were struggling to make C's and they were making A's. My friends and I went to Karns High, which is not known to be a bad school. Socially, the CAK students were fine, but educationally they were ahead. That's what is really important when you are picking out a school. I wish my parents would've sent me to CAK, it would've made college a lot less of a shock for me. Public schools are a joke! And college can be tough. Do your kids a favor and don't be so concerned about their social life, be more concerned with their education and future.

Wow. What to say...Now that I'm in college, I wish that I had gone to another school instead of CAK. Normal kids will have a tough time at CAK--no differences are tolerated at all. Everyone wears the same, expensive clothes, and drives absurdly expensive cars and trucks. Believe it or not, Webb is much better about the social part of school--according to a couple of my friends who went there, anyway.
Do your kids a favor and send them somewhere other than CAK.
