About This School

Jean Massieu Academy (JMA) is an open-enrollment charter school that was opened in August 1999 to serve deaf or hard of hearing students and their non-deaf siblings or peers. JMA is unique because we are a school of choice providing all instruction in American Sign Language (ASL) creates an equitable communication environment for our students and staff. At JMA, all staff and students, whether deaf or not deaf, communicate freely using ASL. This bilingual environment removes communication barriers that normally exist for deaf and hard of hearing students within the traditional public school systems.

We believe that the bilingual communication environment that exists at JMA has greatly benefited and enhanced our students' academic performances. Our students also benefit from exposure to the large number of professional deaf or hard of hearing adult role models on our instructional staff. This is clearly evidenced by the "can-do" attitude among our students.
Jean Massieu Academy is located in Arlington, TX and is in Jean Massieu Academy School District. It is a charter school that serves 124 students in grades PK-12.

Charter schools are public schools, but differ from traditional public schools in that they are independent and are operated by educators, parents, community leaders, educational entrepreneurs, or others. Funding for charter schools is based on designated local or state educational organizations. Those organizations are responsible for monitoring and assessing the quality and effectiveness of education, but permit the schools to operate outside of the traditional public school education system. See Jean Massieu Academy's test results to learn more about school performance.

In 2011, Jean Massieu Academy had 9 students for every full-time equivalent teacher. The Texas average is 15 students per full-time equivalent teacher.
