Deretchin Elementary School Reviews
If you have to live here and can't go private, avoid Deretchin
We have been in the school district for eight years. The Woodlands schools are pretty good as far as test scores and where ranking academics are concerned. Deretchin is the worst elementary school if you have kids with any learning disability including, ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, or just minor issues such as retaining information and processing. If your child is brilliant and self motivated, by all means go to Deretchin. These types of kids fit into their box great. Deretchin focuses on their rigid rules and structure in their classrooms and loads the kids up on homework and busywork. The children learn through abnormal amounts of paperwork rather than through teacher instruction. We have had 4 children go to Deretchin. We have found that if we can just survive Deretchin, with confidence intact, the middle school is such a better experience and the children excel. Deretchin is a confidence crusher. It is really sad. I used to think that I was the only one who felt this way. I now know that there are substitute teachers who won't even teach and Deretchin because the culture is so bad. I know counselors at other schools who tell me that they have had issues with both Deretchin and Coulson Tough and the stress levels of both students and parents in these schools. We refer to them as Coulson Tough Community College and Deretchin Boot Camp. Probably 9 out of 10 parents I talk to have the same opinion. We are all overwhelmed and unsatisfied and our children are stressed and not well educated....But our standardized test scores are exceptional.
If you want your child to go to a school that only cares about your child doing well on the TAKS test, then this is the school for you. Deritchen is focused on the “Exemplary School” banner to hang on the wall so they teach the test, the whole test, and nothing but the test. The TAKS tests may be important to the teachers and staff when it comes to their yearly wage increase but a school that doesn’t seem to care about teaching children how to think, how to reason, and how to imagine, has their priorities mixed up. If you just want your kids to get on a bus in the morning and not have to think about them until they get home in the afternoon, then this is the school for you because believe me, they don’t want any input from the parents on what is best for the child. The Administration and Staff at the school are unprofessional and even appear to be untrained in their duties. They really should review the school district’s policies when dealing with issues.
