We had a similar experience with Cheney Middle School. Our child is an accelerated learner and the school would not find a way to challenge her. They believe ability grouping is unfair to the slower learners and extra curricular activities are more important than homework. Middle school aged kids are capable of so much more than CMS is giving them credit for. The staff is kind and well meaning but their educational philosophies did not match ours.

Very slow pace of instructions/learning. Very low expectations for students. Teachers are holding capable students from progressing to be able to bring the average up. To prove the statement I'm giving my own child's example. Being identified as a "Highly capable student" he was not allowed by the school authority to skip the grade (by the parents' request that based on student's highest MAP scores), move ahead in Math. He was not allowed to take Algebra, or even Pre-Algebra in 7th grade (by the parents request), even though, by his score, knowledge, and previous teacher's advice he was ready to take the course in 6th grade. In result all " A" with 4.0 gpa student is transferred to another school district and has to start his 8 grade with the Math and Language Art's courses a YEAR BEHIND. He was accepted for the English and Math 7 grade, according to his transcripts from Cheney Middle School. This is how that school will damage your kids’ education!
