What a great second family!!

Balboa Elementary School

Valerie Marshall-Taylor: I am impressed with the staff at Balboa. The principal, Ms. Lyness, is active participant, with ensuring that students are appropriately assessed and functioning at their highest levels. This is a school who is a leading example of "No Child Left Behind." The teachers are supportive with making sure that special needs students receive needed services. The office staff, Ms DeMerrit, the school nurse, Connie and all the staff are wonderful supports and very pleasant to deal with. The teachers are exceptional, and demonstrate that they want the children to succeed. I am grateful to have my grandchildren and foster grandchildren in this wonderful school. Thanks.

What is it?

The Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) are annual tests used to measure a student's mastery of the state's grade-level academic standards contained in the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs).

Which Grades and Subjects?

Students in grades 3 through 8 are assessed in reading and math, in grades 4 and 7 in writing, and in grades 5 and 8 in science.

How is it Scored?

A student's performance on the reading, math and science MSP is reported using scale scores. Scale scores are three-digit numbers that are used to place the student into one of four levels: Advanced (Level 4), Proficient (Level 3), Basic (Level 2) and Below Basic (Level 1). The goal is for all students to meet or exceed standards (at or above Level 3).
