I am an alumni of what use to be known as "Alldredge Academy." I started talking a bad turn down my life path when I was thirteen years of age. My parents decided they could no longer help me on my own and they sent me away in April of 2002. I attended the program for four months. It was not easy. I was very angry I was there and was angry at my parents for sending me there. Now that the program is closed, I feel sorry for the children that need help and no longer have this program as an option.
I spent a month hiking through the beautiful mountains of West Virginia with a 40 pound pack on my back. I'm not a skinny thing. I was 160 pounds at the time and 15 years of age.. a city girl who never lifted a finger to help carry a box to the basement. It was very challenging but every minute of it had purpose. The end of that month, I was able to see my parents again. I begged them to take me home and that I had learned my lesson.... but they stood tall and told me no. The next month, we continued our lessons in the Village (my favorite part of the program!) We learned how to play hand drums which we got to make by hand! We had amazing mentors who were easy to bond with. We got to go White Water Rafting, Rock Climbing, Canoeing, and Caving..!! It was so much fun!! At the end of that month, we were able to stay with our parents this time. I still begged them to take me home, but they refused. The last two months, I spent at the school... I saw many kids come and go.. and I made many friends..
I am proud to say that I have attended EVERY reunion since then But one... I will be going to the 2009 reunion in a month. I am now 22 years of age. I can tell you I am adopted into a white family as a Hispanic and did everything I could to fit into my own race; which is really where most of my problems began. At the age of 22, I have graduated High School with a 3.4 GPA and, of course, had some set backs. I like to call that LIFE!! Everyone makes mistakes. I moved out of my parents house in Virginia almost two years ago and now live in the state of North Carolina about 20 minutes from my birth mother and my four younger half siblings. If it wasn't for Alldredge, I would probably have 4 or 5 children by now, I'd probably be in MS13, and I'd probably be doing and selling things that are 100% against the law. But I am not!!! I am on a wonderful path in life! I go to school full time, I have an amazing boyfriend who is a US Marine. I have a supportive family... and all Alldredge did was help me realize everything I was taking for granted in my life; everything from toilet paper to my family and friends... especially myself.
Because of the wonderful mentors I had at alldredge, I am going to school to become a troubled teens counselor / adoption therapist and am debating in doing something for the government as a victims advocate. I thank God EVERY DAY for giving me amazing parents who had the courage to let me leave in my time of need knowing they could not help me... I thank God for my parents sending me to Alldredge so that I could become a better ME!! If Alldredge were still open, I would tell you how much my lifelong friends and I would recommend Alldredge for ANY child in need. It's a shame there aren't more Alldredge's around the country for people's children of all incomes. It was a blessing for me... and a lifelong changing experience!!
