Andrews Heights Elementary School
The only parent who thinks this is an excellent school is one who has never seen one.  The reason West Virginia is last in the nation in educational and economic attainment is because most West Virginians have never experienced a quality of life above what they know.  Therefore, their expectations are extraordinarily low.  There's a ditch along the front of this school that's full of raw sewage and everyone just accepts it.  The playground is adjacent to standing raw sewage.  If a student strays off the pavement, the faculty and staff are forced to clean the human sewage from the child's feet and legs.  These are just two examples of how incredibly poor this school is.  Yet, parents and the community just accept conditions as they are.  Then again, it's all they know.  They should expect better.

Andrews Hieghts is a great school with great teachers. I am a parent of 2 children that attend this school and we are not disadvantaged. The school is meant to accommadate 150 students & we have 370 students. The majority of those are out of area students that have transferred because Andrews Heights is the best school in the area & parents know it. The school itself has been left behind by the KCSB and needs to be renovated and eliminate the 4 portables. Get past the outside and see what you get on the inside - great, caring teachers - structured & fair administration - it is an excellent school! I am very proud that my children have the opportunity to go to Andrews Heights Elementary - Kanawha County's little secret school of excellence!

Most of the students at Andrews Heights are from disadvantaged backgrounds.  Violence is rampant.  My children consider a successful day one that they make it through without being physically assaulted.  My son has lost a tooth to violence and my daughter carries emotional scars that I fear will last throughout her life.  Unfortunately, with the poor state of the economy, we have no choice but to remain here.

My child attends classes in a dilapidated house trailer parked next to the school.  The trailer is full of mold and represents a health hazard.  The county school board says there's nothing they can do.  The teachers who are forced to work under these conditions are very demoralized.  I'm extremely concerned for my child's health, not to mention education.

After we moved here from another state, we were shocked at the low academic standards at this school.  What truly overwhelmed us, though, was the physical abuse our children suffered at the hands of other students.  Despite many unsuccessful attempts to find a solution, we finally moved to another community.
