Haba Jaba: Just a word of clarification to educaiton.com...where do you get your facts? Northstar Middle School certainly does NOT have an average of 14 students per teacher. My daughter is currently in an art class of 32. Parents need to be aware of REAL class sizes. Numbers can be crunched and averaged in many different ways. For simplified example, a class for students with special needs could have 8 in it and a regular art class could have 32 students...on paper it look likes a total 40 students, so people that have never actually set foot inside the school THINK that there is an average of 20 students in each class. Please folks....especially parents...know your facts. We need to stand up for smaller class sizes. My daughters class is so large, that the teacher has a hard time dividing her time equally among all students. If we do even more math....each class is approximately 45 min. in length. If the teacher takes 5 minutes to settle students in and take attendance, 5 minutes to explain the daily goal, and 5 minutes to clean up, that leaves students with 30 min. of working time. This leaves the teacher with less that 60 sec. to "connect" with each student individually. As a parent, I wonder...how does a teacher make sure that students are learning? With 60 sec. on average at the of the week that leaves my kid with only 5 min. or less of one-on-one communication with the teacher. At the end of the semester, that leaves only 90 min. that my child was able to connect with the teacher. However, this isn't accurate either as it doesn't take into account days my child was sick or days that their is a special event of some sort. So maybe take at least 5minutes off of that. There are three emotionally challenged students in my daughter's class that take even more time away from her time to connect with the teacher because these particular students need "attention". So take away at least another 10 min. due to these "inclusion" students. So...in a perfect world with these factors, my daughter would have only 75 minutes for the entire semester to be able to get one-on-one communication with her art teacher. This poor teacher is set up for failure from the get go...how can she possibly achieve all that she is expected to achieve? Schools can't do it alone, and specifically teachers...they can't do it alone! If we want our Wisconsin schools to be great that get a hint ... LOWER CLASS SIZES! I wish that education.com was accurate...it would be a dream world, a learning fantasy world, if there were only 14 students per teacher. Think of how much better our schools would be if this would be true! I'm fearful that our awesome art teacher will leave the teaching profession and find something less stressful. Unfortunately, not enough people in politics care to lower class size. It's too expensive. It's just our future, and our economy, so to save money let's just place 40 -50 students in each room. This makes that most sense financially, don't you think?
