Park Elementary School
Sherri Wickiser: My Granddaughter comes from a long line of square pegs trying to fit into round holes. Nothing wrong with that, it just makes things a little tougher. She went to Cottonwood, and then Westwood. Her first years went well, and then she got a new teacher. This teacher would ridicule Vera in front of the class when Vera forgot homework or didn't get something done. They would brow beat her in front of the others when she didn't want to participate. When she would get into trouble, they had a phone in the classroom, and they would call my daughter, put Vera on the phone, and tell her what to say to her mother instead of talking to her themselves. All this while class was going on!! I watched Vera withdraw, and withdrawl into herself. It was breaking my heart and making me sick. I had had my own bad teacher in 7th, 8th, and my second year of 8th. He was a math teacher that would berate me in front of the others, tease me, make fun of me, all because I wasn't one of the jockie girls. He taught so he could coach. I am unable to do math beyond a 6th grade level to this day, and I was so scared for Vera. She was so much younger than I, and she actually became cynical-At 7 years old! I would say 'Have a good day tomorrow', and she would say,'Probably not.'. My heart was aching and breaking. Then, my daughter put her in Park. Right away, I noticed a difference! And what a difference! Slowly at first, she began to come back to me. Over the course of the year, she has become again my sweet, smart, talkative, fun, funny, happy, curious, vibrant grandbaby that she had been!! Because of your staff, Mrs. Jolly and her associate who's name I can never remember, all the teachers, and the basic philosophy of the school, you have given me back my grandbaby, and given her back her childhood!! Is she still a square peg? Yep. But you guys don't make that a detriment, or even an issue. I love Park more than I've ever loved any school for what you have done for my family. You just don't know what it means to me to say "You have a good day tomorrow," and to have her reply "I will!" (I'm crying as I write this). Thank you all so very much, and from the bottom of my heart!! God bless you all!!!
