Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare genetic condition where the amino acid phenylalanine, which is found naturally in breast milk, cannot be metabolized. If toxic levels build up, the brain can get damaged.
Get your baby tested for PKU soon after birth. If your baby has PKU, starting her on a low-protein diet can prevent mental retardation.
