4. Haemophilus Influenzae Type B (Hib) Vaccine
Before this vaccine, the Hib bacteria was the leading cause of meningitis in kids 5 and younger. Meningitis is a bacterial infection that causes inflammation around the brain and spinal cord. The Hib vaccine provides your child with long-term protection against Hib meningitis; pneumonia; pericarditis (an infection of the heart membrane); and infections of the blood, bones and joints.
