Paragraph 1
1. the terms greenhouse effect and global warming have been used in scientific history for many, many years. 2. discussions of global warming first appeared when a swedish scientist, svante arrhenius (1859–1927), claimed in 1896 that burning Fossil fuel might eventually increase global warming. 3. he further proposed that a relationship existed between carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and Temperature gains. 4. arrhenius noted that because of the absorption of water and carbon dioxide, the Average Surface Temperature of the earth is about 15 degrees Celsius. 5. this is what we call the natural greenhouse effect. 6. however, arrhenius then suggested that doubling carbon dioxide would result in a 5 degrees Celsius temperature increase.

1. arrhenius and his colleague, thomas chamberlin, made another calculation: human activities could warm the earth by adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. 2. years passed before this was actually verified in 1987. 3. then the topic was forgotten because scientists thought that human influences were minute compared to Natural Forces such as solar activity and ocean circulation. 4. in fact, a popular theory was that the oceans acted as huge carbon sinks that automatically cancelled out pollution.
