Practice Exercises: Passive or Active Voice

Identify whether the following sentences are written in the passive or active voice.

  1. The doctor gave me a shot so that I wouldn't get sick.
  2. Caroline rode her bike to school.
  3. The mail was delivered around noon today.
  4. Halfway through the picnic, I was stung on my foot.
  5. The grocery store clerk handed me my change.
  6. My father taught me how to surf.
  7. Camels store water in their humps.
  8. I was given a birthday gift.

The following sentences are all written in the active voice. Rewrite each one in the passive voice.

  1. Suzy showed me the painting.
  2. Ben took a photograph of his dog.
  3. I washed the dishes this morning.

The following sentences are all written in the passive voice. Rewrite them using the active voice.

  1. My meal was served to me by the waiter at the restaurant.
  2. The trash was collected by the janitor.
  3. Footprints were made in the snow by me.

  10. The clerk is performing the action of the sentence by handing me my change, so the sentence is written in the active voice.

  12. Who did the teaching? My father did, so the sentence is written in the active voice.

  14. The camels are the subject of the sentence, and they are doing the storing, so the sentence is written in the active voice.

  16. This sentence is written in the passive voice, because the subject of the sentence is receiving the action of the sentence. I is the subject, and I was given a gift.

  17. I was shown the painting.
  18. Instead of Suzy being the subject of the sentence, now I is the subject and receives the action instead of performing it.

  19. A photograph was taken of Ben's dog.
  20. In the active voice version of this sentence, we knew that Ben was the one who took the photograph. He was the subject of the sentence. Now, in the passive voice version, the photograph is the subject, and it is receiving the action. We aren't sure anymore who took the photograph.

  21. This morning, the dishes were washed.
  22. I was the subject in the original sentence. Now the subject is the dishes, and the action is happening to them.

  23. At the restaurant, the waiter served me my meal.
  24. Instead of the meal being the subject of the sentence and receiving the action of the sentence, in the active voice version, the waiter is the subject and performs the action.

  25. The janitor collected the trash.
  26. Now, in the active voice version of the sentence, the janitor is the subject of the sentence and also performs the action of the sentence. He collected the trash.

  27. I made footprints in the snow.
  28. In the active voice, I is the subject of the sentence and also performs the action of making footprints.
