## Introduction to Changing Percents to Decimals

Percent means hundredths. For example, 17% means or 0.17. Another way to think of 17% is to think of 17 equal parts out of 100 equal parts (see Fig. 6-1 ).

## Changing Percents to Decimals

To change a percent to a decimal, drop the percent sign and move the decimal point two places to the left .

#### Example 1

Write 8% as a decimal.

#### Solution 1

8% = 0.08

Math Note: If there is no decimal point in the percent, it is at the end of the number: i.e., 8% = 8.0%.

#### Example 2

Write 63% as a decimal.

63% = 0.63

#### Example 3

Write 253% as a decimal.

253% = 2.53

#### Example 4

Write 43.5% as a decimal.

43.5% = 0.435

#### Example 5

Write 0.2% as a decimal.

0.2% = 0.002
