Spectroscopy and Structure Practice Problems

Practice 1

Which peaks in the IR spectra distinguish cyclohexane from cyclohexene?

Solution 1

One of the C-H stretches in cyclohexane is above 3000 cm-1 (Csp2- H); in cyclohexane the C-H stretches are below 3000 cm-1 (Csp3–H). Cyclohexene has a C=C stretch at about 1650 cm-1.

Practice 2

How can NMR distinguish between p-xylene and ethylbenzene?

Solution 2

p-CH3C6H4CH3 has two kinds of H's and its NMR spectrum has two singlets. C6H5CH2CH3 has three kinds of H's, and its NMR spectrum has a singlet for the aromatic hydrogens, a quartet for CH2 H's, and a triplet for CH3 H's.
