  1. NaBD4 followed by H2O
  2. NaBD4 followed by CH3OD.

Solution 1

  1. (CH3)2CDOH
  2. (CH3)2CDOD.

In both reactions, nucleophilic : D first attacks and reduces the carbonyl to form a basic alkoxide salt.

Practice 2

Prepare p–ClC6H4CHOHCH2CH3 from RCHO and R'MgX.
