The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) gives eligible children with mental retardation and other disabilities the right to receive special services and assistance in school. Therefore, children with mental retardation are guaranteed a special education. Parents must work with school professionals to decide what types of services and interventions are most effective and beneficial for the child. Parents must work closely with school professionals to help these children reach their full potentials.
