Angel Island Poetry

Updated on Sep 5, 2012
2.6 based on 5 ratings

Chinese immigrants often stayed on California's Angel Island for months waiting to find out if they would be admitted to the United States. While they waited, they wrote poetry, called wu-yan-li-shi, using five Chinese characters per line. You can try your own English version of this style and get a taste of the life of a hopeful immigrant.
