100 Books Project
Does your kid have a voracious appetite for reading? She will probably be surprised to find out how many books she's already devoured at such a young age. Ask her to recall as many books as she can remember reading, whether it was at school, home, or the library. She'll create a chart with miniature book covers with the title and authors on the front, allowing her to visualize the number of book worlds she has entered. This fun collection celebrates your child’s literacy and may inspire her to curl up with a new book or re-read one of her favorites!
What You Need:
- Large poster board
- White paper
- Markers
- Old school reading lists and book report suggestions are helpful
- Craft glue
- Scissors
What You Do:
- Have your child cut out 100 pieces of rectangular paper, each the same size. All 100 pieces should be small enough to fit on the poster board. She can cut multiple pieces at the same time to expedite the process.
- Ask her to fold the papers in half, so that they resemble a small book.
- She should think of all of the books she has ever read, for school or for pleasure, and write each title on each piece's book cover. Ask her write down the author, using the Internet for assistance.
- Invite her to sketch a quick picture that represents the each story, under the title and author.
- Have her glue all of the miniature books onto the poster board. To keep it simple, they can be arranged in any random order.
- On the inside of the book, have your child write the numeric order from 1 to 100.
- If it's difficult to think of 100 books she has already read, she can leave the remaining books blank. After completing each additional book, she can mark it down on her "100 Books" chart.
Ask her to highlight or put stickers next to all of her favorite books. These might be good choices for her to re-read or recommend to her friends!
